Kahani 8: Luzern Showers & Titlis Dreams

Rain, Revolving Gondolas & Snow Dreams – A Day in Luzern & Titlis

In continuation to our Kahani 7, our journey from Interlaken to Luzern wasn’t as smooth as Swiss trains usually promise. Instead, we lived through a rare chapter — a train network failure. Delayed back from Saanen, we finally reached Interlaken, picked up our bags, and began the bittersweet ride to Luzern.

As the train curved around the familiar mountains, the reality of leaving them tugged at our hearts. The turquoise Brienz River, shimmering under light drizzle, felt like Switzerland was saying one last goodbye before handing us over to another city.

A Rainy Welcome in Luzern

Instead of sunshine, Luzern welcomed us with showers of love. Umbrellas came out, luggage wheels splashed through puddles, and we finally checked into our self-check-in city apartment — simple, modern, and perfectly located.

Exhaustion had wrapped itself around us, but cravings don’t wait. That night we stumbled into Kanchi, a South Indian restaurant, where crispy dosas, tangy sambhar, and spicy chutneys brought the flavors of home to our Swiss journey. With happy stomachs and heavier eyelids, we drifted into one of the deepest sleeps of the trip.

Journey to Engelberg

Morning in Luzern had a fresh energy. Our target? Mount Titlis — one of Switzerland’s crown jewels. Thanks to our Swiss Pass, there were no tickets to buy, no hassle. Just check the train timings in advance in the app, hop on the train, and start your adventure.

The train to Engelberg felt like entering a painting. Rolling meadows, wooden chalets, cows grazing with their iconic bells ringing like background music — every window view was postcard-perfect. Greeted by the crisp alpine air and postcard beauty, with snow-dusted peaks towering in the background.

From Engelberg, we walked a short distance to the gondola base station. And that’s where the magic began - Swiss Gondola’s are “Gondolas to Heaven”.

The first gondola ride was private and a cozy room you could hire - just you and your partner and the endless alpine scenery. Forests, waterfalls, and mountain chalets passed beneath our feet as if we were floating above a fairytale village. The lake at the middle of nowhere, formed from the small waterfalls - shimmered in the distance. It felt surreal, almost like ascending into another world.

Then came the legendary Rotair gondola, the world’s first 360° revolving cable car. Slowly, gracefully, it lifted us higher and higher — rotating as it went — giving us views in every direction.

The Summit: Ice, Thrill & Wonder

At the top of Titlis, we stepped out into a world of white. The air was icy and crisp, and within minutes, our cheeks tingled from the cold.

  • The Ice Cave (Tunnel): Entering this frozen tunnel felt like walking through the veins of a glacier. The walls shimmered blue and white, the air thin and freezing — so much that we had to catch our breath. It was beautiful, eerie, and unforgettable.
  • Titlis Cliff Walk: Then came the adventure highlight. The suspension bridge — the highest in Europe. Standing there, letting the wind whip you, snow swirling, the valley stretched thousands of feet below. Each step made the bridge sway ever so slightly. Thrilling? Absolutely. Scary? Definitely. Worth it? Beyond words.
  • Snow Activities: Around us, people were skiing, sledging, and hiking in the snow. Some laughed, some fell, some just stood staring — like us — in awe of where they were.

A Slice of Bollywood & Lunch with a View

For us, Titlis was more than just a mountain — it was a memory etched in Bollywood. Would you have ever thought, Swiss would have this much Bollywood love? Standing near the DDLJ poster, all IGramable views - we felt a mix of nostalgia and wonder.

Lunch was simple but soul-satisfying. At the Titlis Dome restaurant, steaming bowls of soup, spaghetti, swiss fondue, soups, and warm meals felt like heaven in the middle of snowstorms. Sometimes it’s not about fancy food — it’s about the warmth it brings.

On the Way Back – A Pause in Engelberg

The descent was just as magical. The gondola slowly lowered us from the clouds, back into Engelberg’s green embrace. Instead of rushing straight back to Luzern, we stopped and explored the Engelberg village — a charming town with cobbled streets, traditional chalets, and cozy cafés.

Here, life slowed down. Locals biked past, children played outside bakeries, and the church bells chimed in the distance. It was the perfect pause before heading back to the city’s rhythm.

Final Thought

Kahani 8 was all about contrasts — the rain-drenched welcome of Luzern, the snowy thrill of Titlis, and the serene calm of Engelberg. Switzerland has a way of making every day feel like three journeys in one.

From revolving gondolas to icy tunnels, cliff walks to cinematic nostalgia — Titlis wasn’t just a mountain, it was an emotion. A reminder that sometimes the coldest places give you the warmest memories.
